Apple is set to introduce a redesigned entry-level MacBook Pro powered by the M7 chip in early 2027. This model will adopt design elements from the forthcoming high-end MacBook Pro, rumored to be named MacBook Ultra, which is expected to debut between late 2026 and early 2027.
Historically, Apple has staggered design updates across its MacBook Pro lineup. For instance, the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Pro and M1 Max chips was introduced in 2021, while the base model retained the 13-inch design until 2023, when it transitioned to the 14-inch chassis with the M3 chip. Similarly, the 2016 MacBook Pro redesign took until 2019 to reach the entry-level model. This time, however, the redesign is anticipated to reach the entry-level MacBook Pro within approximately six months of its introduction in the high-end models.
The upcoming entry-level MacBook Pro, codenamed K104, is slated for release in the first half of 2027. It will feature a 14-inch display and a design consistent with the higher-end MacBooks that are expected to include touchscreens. This aligns with reports that Apple is preparing a revamped entry-level MacBook Pro for as early as the first half of next year, adopting a new design in line with higher-end MacBooks featuring touch screens due between the end of this year and early next year.
In the interim, Apple plans to release another entry-level MacBook Pro with the current design and the M6 chip, expected to debut in fall 2026 alongside the redesigned high-end MacBook Pros. Notably, these high-end models are anticipated to launch with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, as Apple has reportedly abandoned plans for high-end M6 chips to accelerate the development of the M7.
The anticipated release schedule is as follows:
- Fall 2026: Entry-level MacBook Pro with M6 and existing design; high-end MacBook Pro with M5 Pro/Max and new design.
- Spring 2027: Entry-level MacBook Pro with M7 and new design.
- Fall 2027: High-end MacBook Pro refresh with M7 Pro/M7 Max.
The redesign is expected to include a thinner chassis, OLED displays with touch support, and possibly a Dynamic Island feature.
Given recent price increases, this development is significant for consumers. The redesigned 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro is likely to be priced over $2,500. Therefore, those seeking a more budget-friendly option with the M7 chip and new design will only need to wait until the following spring. While the entry-level MacBook Pro’s price point has risen to $1,999, reflecting the impact of the ongoing memory shortage, the accelerated rollout of the redesign offers consumers access to the latest features without a prolonged wait.
