Google has expanded the capabilities of its Gemini app for macOS by introducing Gemini Spark, a 24/7 personal AI agent designed to assist with local tasks and automate workflows directly on users’ desktops. This update marks a significant enhancement to the app, which was initially launched in April 2026 as a native Mac application.
With the release of version 1.80.15.516, Gemini Spark integrates seamlessly into the macOS environment. Users will notice a new ‘Spark’ tab in the sidebar, mirroring the web interface. This feature allows users to designate specific ‘Connected folders’ that Gemini Spark can access, enabling the AI to organize files, convert documents into Google Docs, and perform other file management tasks. For instance, users can instruct Gemini Spark to scan unorganized files, group them by type or context, and create a clean folder structure, presenting the organization plan for user approval before execution.
In addition to file management, Gemini Spark offers customization options for existing Schedules and Skills, allowing users to tailor the AI’s functionalities to their specific needs. The update also introduces new settings to enhance user control and experience. A ‘Keep this Mac awake to run tasks’ option prevents the computer from entering sleep mode while the Gemini app is active, ensuring uninterrupted task execution. Additionally, an ‘Alert when a backup fails’ setting notifies users if the AI encounters issues backing up files in connected folders, seeking approval before proceeding. This feature is enabled by default to maintain data integrity.
To monitor usage, a new ‘Usage limits’ page has been added, accessible from the account menu in the bottom-left corner of the app. This page provides users with insights into their interaction with Gemini Spark, promoting informed usage and management of the AI’s capabilities.
