Threads has introduced significant updates to its Live Chats feature, aiming to enhance user engagement and accessibility. These enhancements include real-time translation capabilities, expanded hosting privileges, and improved moderation tools.
Initially launched in April 2026, Live Chats allowed up to 150 users to participate in public, real-time group conversations centered around live events. Participants could share messages, photos, videos, links, and engage through reactions and polls. If a chat reached its participant limit, additional users could still observe the conversation, react to messages, and vote in polls.
Previously, the ability to create and host Live Chats was restricted to a select group of creators and Community Champions. With the latest update, all Community Champions now have the privilege to initiate and manage Live Chats. They can also invite up to three co-hosts to assist in moderating the discussions, thereby fostering more dynamic and well-managed conversations.
To further support hosts, Threads has introduced new moderation tools. Hosts now have the authority to delete messages for all participants, ensuring that discussions remain respectful and on-topic. Additionally, the platform is experimenting with features that make host messages more visually prominent within chats, aiding in clearer communication and guidance during live events.
A notable addition is the integration of real-time translation within Live Chats. This feature aims to bridge language barriers, making conversations more inclusive and accessible to a global audience. This is particularly beneficial during international events, such as the World Cup, where participants from diverse linguistic backgrounds come together to engage in discussions.
Looking ahead, Threads is developing additional features to enhance the Live Chats experience. These include desktop support, allowing users to participate in Live Chats from their computers, and the ability to pin messages within chats for easy reference. While these features are in the pipeline, specific release dates have not been announced.
These updates reflect Threads’ commitment to fostering inclusive and engaging community interactions. By expanding hosting capabilities, introducing robust moderation tools, and implementing real-time translation, Threads is positioning itself as a versatile platform for real-time, global conversations. Users can anticipate a more seamless and enriched experience as these features continue to evolve.
