Apple has recently updated its support page to provide more detailed advice for users whose iPhones have been stolen. The revised guidance includes new warnings about potential scams and specific recommendations to enhance device security.
Previously, Apple suggested that users display their contact information on the lock screen to facilitate the return of lost devices. However, the updated advice now cautions against this practice in cases of theft. Including personal contact details could expose users to social engineering attacks, where thieves might impersonate Apple or mobile carriers to extract sensitive information.
Additionally, Apple advises against removing the stolen device from the Find My app. Doing so would disable Activation Lock, making it easier for thieves to erase and resell the device. Activation Lock is a critical feature that prevents unauthorized access by requiring the original owner’s Apple ID and password to reactivate the device.
The company also emphasizes the importance of promptly marking the device as lost, even if Stolen Device Protection is enabled. While Stolen Device Protection adds extra security layers, such as requiring biometric authentication for sensitive actions and imposing delays on certain changes, these safeguards are time-limited. Activating Lost Mode immediately helps protect both the device and the associated Apple account.
