Apple’s latest iOS 27 introduces a significantly enhanced Siri, marking a substantial departure from its previous iterations. This transformation, however, took longer than anticipated. Mike Rockwell, who assumed leadership of Siri last year, shed light on the reasons behind this delay during a recent press briefing.
Initially, Apple developed an incremental update to Siri, incorporating tool-calling features atop the existing framework. Despite having a functional version, the team felt it didn’t fully realize their envisioned experience. Consequently, they opted for a more comprehensive redesign.
Rockwell explained that the team decided to dismantle the existing Siri infrastructure and rebuild it entirely. This overhaul was grounded on advanced models, resulting in a more capable and versatile Siri. The new design introduces a dedicated application, native multimodal capabilities, and a privacy-centric foundation. Moreover, this unified Siri experience is now consistent across all Apple platforms, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Vision Pro, CarPlay, and AirPods.
By choosing to rebuild Siri from scratch, Apple has positioned it as a more robust and integrated assistant, aligning with the company’s broader vision for seamless user experiences across its ecosystem. This strategic decision underscores Apple’s commitment to delivering high-quality, cohesive functionalities, even if it necessitates extended development timelines.
