Philips Hue and WiZ Introduce Sports Live for 2026 World Cup

Signify has unveiled Sports Live, a new feature for its Philips Hue and WiZ smart lighting systems, designed to synchronize lighting effects with live soccer match events in real time. This innovation aims to enhance the at-home viewing experience, particularly in anticipation of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Unlike traditional synchronization methods that rely on HDMI hardware to analyze on-screen content, Sports Live connects directly to live match data. This approach allows the system to respond instantly to key in-game moments such as goals, yellow cards, and red cards, without the need for additional synchronization devices. During less eventful periods, the lights can display colors representing a favorite team, the leading team, or remain neutral white when the score is tied.

Users can set up Sports Live through the Philips Hue or WiZ mobile applications. In the Hue app, the feature is accessible under the Sync tab. Users select a room or zone containing at least one color-capable light and can choose favorite teams to receive match notifications. Current and upcoming games are listed within the app, and the system automatically activates 15 minutes before kickoff. A delay adjustment tool is available to synchronize lighting effects with the specific broadcast being viewed. Notably, any lights already paired with the Hue Sync Box will take precedence and will not be utilized by Sports Live.

The Philips Hue app version 5.69, which introduces Sports Live, also includes a new Bridge zone feature. This addition consolidates all devices and automations connected to a Hue Bridge into a single group on the home dashboard, allowing users to create scenes and manage groups more efficiently. By default, this zone appears in the “Hidden” section and must be manually enabled.

Sports Live is compatible with existing entertainment features such as Hue Sync and WiZ Sync with TV. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup now underway across Mexico, Canada, and the United States, this feature offers soccer enthusiasts an immersive way to experience the tournament from the comfort of their homes.

By integrating real-time sports data with smart lighting, Signify continues to push the boundaries of home entertainment. This development not only enhances the viewing experience for soccer fans but also sets a precedent for future integrations of live events with smart home technology. As the World Cup progresses, it will be interesting to see how users adopt and interact with this feature, potentially influencing the evolution of smart home entertainment solutions.
