Google’s latest Android 17 QPR1 Beta 4 update brings the ‘Screen Reactions’ feature to Pixel devices, enabling users to record their screen and front-facing camera simultaneously. This integration simplifies the creation of reaction videos by eliminating the need for third-party apps or external editing.
Within the system’s screen recorder, a new ‘Show selfie camera’ option appears alongside existing controls. Activating this feature provides an immediate preview, allowing users to adjust framing before recording. Notably, ‘Screen Reactions’ is available only when recording the entire screen; it does not support the ‘Single app’ recording mode.
Users can enhance their recordings by adding a colored background to the selfie video using a paint swatch tool. The current palette includes black, purple, red, blue, green, and orange. Additionally, the feature automatically enables microphone recording, though this can be disabled if desired.
The subject isolation in ‘Screen Reactions’ is impressive, delivering clear cutouts of the user’s face, shoulders, and even hands. This performance is consistent across devices, including those with lower-resolution front cameras like the Pixel A-series.
By integrating ‘Screen Reactions’ directly into the operating system, Google streamlines the process of creating reaction content, making it more accessible and efficient for users. This development reflects the growing demand for user-friendly content creation tools in the mobile ecosystem.
