OpenAI has rolled out a significant update to its Codex desktop application for Mac, introducing a feature called Appshots. This new functionality allows users to seamlessly integrate the context of their active applications into Codex chats.
By pressing Command-Command, users can attach the current app window to a Codex thread. This action captures both a screenshot and the textual content of the window, including information beyond the visible area. This enhancement aims to provide Codex with a comprehensive understanding of the user’s ongoing tasks, facilitating more relevant and efficient interactions.
In addition to Appshots, the update brings several other improvements:
Enhanced Goal Mode
The /goal command has been upgraded to support tasks of varying complexity. Users can set specific milestones, and Codex will persistently work towards achieving them, even over extended periods. This feature is accessible across the Codex app, IDE Extension, and CLI, allowing users to monitor progress, provide guidance, and pause tasks as needed.
Improved In-App Browser
The in-app browser within Codex has been optimized for speed and precision. It now includes an advanced annotation mode and supports batch comments, streamlining the process of reviewing and interacting with web content directly within the application.
Shared Plugins for Teams
Business users can now share custom plugins among team members, enhancing collaborative efforts. Enterprise users interested in early access to this feature are encouraged to contact OpenAI for more information.
Furthermore, analytics in Codex for business and enterprise users have been expanded to provide detailed insights into active users, credits, tokens, runs, user leaderboards, lines of code generated, and plugin usage.
These updates reflect OpenAI’s commitment to evolving Codex into a versatile tool that extends beyond its initial focus on agentic coding. By integrating features like Appshots and enhancing collaborative capabilities, Codex is positioning itself as a comprehensive AI assistant for a wide range of professional applications.
