Perplexity Launches AI-Driven Personal Computer App for All Mac Users

Perplexity’s Personal Computer Now Available to All Mac Users

Perplexity has announced that its innovative AI-driven application, Personal Computer, is now accessible to all Mac users through its desktop app. This expansion marks a significant step in integrating advanced AI capabilities directly onto personal devices.

Personal Computer is an evolution of Perplexity’s earlier cloud-based AI system, Perplexity Computer. Unlike its predecessor, Personal Computer operates locally, granting AI agents access to a user’s files, applications, and web resources. This design enables the automation of complex, multi-step workflows tailored to individual needs. As Perplexity describes it, Personal Computer takes Computer out of the cloud-only world and onto the device where most of your real work already takes place.

The release responds to the growing demand for local AI agents, a trend popularized by platforms like OpenClaw. While OpenClaw faced criticism for security vulnerabilities due to elevated permissions, Personal Computer aims to provide a safer AI-enabled computing environment.

Initially introduced last month to Perplexity Max subscribers via a waitlist, Personal Computer is now available to all Mac users through the new Perplexity Mac app. While the app is free to download, accessing Personal Computer’s features requires a Pro or Max subscription.

At launch, Personal Computer can interact with local files, native Mac applications, and web resources. It supports over 400 connectors and utilizes personal context to manage tasks within a secure development environment on Perplexity’s servers. When paired with Perplexity’s AI-powered Comet web browser, it can operate web-based tools without the need for direct connectors.

Designed to run autonomous agents on always-on devices like the Mac Mini, Personal Computer offers remote access capabilities. Users can initiate tasks or approve requests from their iPhone, enhancing flexibility and productivity.

Perplexity envisions Personal Computer being utilized for a variety of tasks, including working with spreadsheets, documents, and projects involving multiple materials. Its cross-application functionality allows agents to compare files from different apps or transfer notes from one app to create drafts in another.

With this general availability, Perplexity plans to deprecate its older Mac app in the coming weeks to focus on the Personal Computer app. The new Mac app is currently available as a direct download from Perplexity’s website and is not yet listed in the Mac App Store.
