Apple’s iOS 27 Empowers Users with Choice of AI Services for Enhanced Intelligence Features
Apple’s forthcoming iOS 27 update is set to revolutionize user interaction by allowing the selection of third-party AI services to power Apple Intelligence features such as Siri, Writing Tools, and Image Playground. This strategic shift moves beyond the current reliance on ChatGPT, offering iPhone, iPad, and Mac users greater autonomy over the AI models managing their text, image, and voice-based tasks.
In test versions of iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, Apple introduces a system termed Extensions. This feature enables installed AI applications to integrate seamlessly with Apple Intelligence, providing generative AI capabilities on demand through supported Apple features. A message in the test software elaborates:
> Extensions allow you to access generative AI capabilities from installed apps on demand, through Apple Intelligence features such as Siri, Writing Tools, Image Playground, and more.
This development signifies a departure from merely adding another chatbot option. Instead, Apple is constructing a framework where applications from companies like Google and Anthropic can directly support Apple Intelligence, provided they incorporate support through their App Store applications. Consequently, users with the Gemini or Claude app installed can opt for these models for specific Apple Intelligence tasks, moving beyond dependence on Apple’s native system or ChatGPT.
This initiative aligns with Apple’s reported agreement with Google to utilize a Gemini-based model for Siri and Apple Intelligence features in iOS 27. However, the broader Extensions system offers users an additional choice by enabling them to select supported third-party AI services independently.
To enhance clarity in responses, Apple plans to allow users to assign distinct voices to external AI models. For instance, Siri could maintain one voice for Apple’s responses, while Claude, Gemini, or another supported model could employ a different voice when providing answers.
For users, the practical advantage lies in control. Whether one prefers Claude for writing, Gemini for search-related answers, or ChatGPT for general tasks, iOS 27 will facilitate these choices as integral parts of the system. Apple is expected to introduce iOS 27 and elaborate on this new AI app integration at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) beginning on June 8.
