Aurora Innovation and McLane Company Partner to Launch Driverless Truck Operations in Texas
Aurora Innovation, a leader in autonomous vehicle technology, has entered into a commercial agreement with McLane Company, a prominent supply chain services provider, to deploy driverless trucks for freight transportation between Dallas and Houston, Texas. This collaboration marks a significant advancement in the integration of autonomous technology within the logistics industry.
Transition from Pilot to Full Deployment
The partnership between Aurora and McLane began in 2023 with a pilot program that utilized autonomous trucks equipped with human safety operators. This initiative successfully expanded to two round-trips daily between the two cities. Building on this success, McLane has now approved the transition to fully driverless operations, with autonomous trucks operating seven days a week on this route.
Operational Details and Safety Measures
In accordance with an agreement with truck manufacturer Paccar, Aurora’s driverless trucks will operate without a human safety driver capable of taking control. However, a human observer will be present in the cab to monitor operations, ensuring compliance with safety protocols. This observer will not engage in vehicle operation but will oversee the autonomous system’s performance.
Innovative Logistics Approach
The operational model involves Aurora’s driverless trucks handling the long-haul segments of the journey between Dallas and Houston. Upon arrival at terminals strategically located off the freeway in both cities, the freight is transferred to McLane’s human drivers, who manage the final leg of deliveries to end customers, such as fast-food restaurants. This hybrid approach leverages the efficiency of autonomous technology for long-distance travel while maintaining human oversight for complex local deliveries.
Strategic Expansion Plans
Aurora plans to extend its driverless operations to additional routes connecting McLane distribution centers across the U.S. Sun Belt by the end of the year. This expansion aligns with Aurora’s broader strategy to transition from developing autonomous technology to becoming a commercial operator generating revenue through driverless routes.
Recent Milestones and Industry Impact
This agreement with McLane follows Aurora’s recent commercial engagements, including a contract to transport frac sand for Detmar Logistics and a memorandum of understanding with Hirschbach Motor Lines to purchase 500 Aurora-powered trucks, expected to finalize later this year. Currently, Aurora operates driverless trucks on multiple routes, including:
– Dallas to Houston
– Fort Worth to El Paso
– El Paso to Phoenix
– Fort Worth to Phoenix
– Laredo to Dallas
These developments underscore Aurora’s commitment to revolutionizing freight transportation through autonomous technology, offering potential benefits such as increased efficiency, reduced operational costs, and enhanced safety in the logistics sector.
