Tornado Strikes Rivian’s Illinois Plant, Impacting R2 SUV Production
Over the weekend, Rivian’s manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois, sustained significant damage when an EF-1 tornado struck the area. The storm specifically impacted Building 2, the section of the plant dedicated to the production of Rivian’s upcoming R2 SUV. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the staff, who promptly adhered to emergency protocols during the incident.
CEO RJ Scaringe commended the team’s swift response in an internal email, expressing pride in their adherence to safety measures and their collective efforts in initiating cleanup and repair operations. He emphasized the importance of resuming operations promptly to maintain the R2 SUV’s production schedule.
Photographs circulating online reveal substantial damage, including a collapsed section of the roof within Building 2. This area, primarily utilized for R2 logistics and parts deliveries, has temporarily ceased operations. Rivian anticipates restarting activities in the affected building within the week, while other sections of the facility continue to function as usual.
The timing of this natural disaster is particularly challenging for Rivian, as the company is on the verge of launching the R2 SUV—a vehicle pivotal to its financial strategy. Over the past five years, Rivian has invested heavily in reducing manufacturing costs for its R1 series. However, the company has yet to achieve profitability, largely due to ongoing infrastructure investments. The successful rollout of the R2 SUV is expected to be a turning point, with projections to sell between 20,000 and 25,000 units by year’s end. Achieving these targets would position the R2 among the fastest-selling new electric vehicles in the U.S., trailing only Tesla’s Model Y.
Production of the R2 is currently underway at the Normal plant, alongside existing R1 models and Rivian’s electric delivery vans. In addition, the company is preparing to construct a new manufacturing facility near Atlanta, Georgia, which will focus on producing the R2 and the forthcoming R3 hatchback. Groundbreaking for the Georgia plant occurred late last year, with vertical construction slated to begin this year and production expected to commence in 2028.
The recent tornado underscores the vulnerabilities that manufacturing operations face due to natural disasters. Rivian’s prompt response and commitment to resuming production highlight the company’s resilience and dedication to its mission of delivering innovative electric vehicles to the market.
