Google Enhances Chrome with AI-Powered ‘Skills’ for Streamlined Workflows
Google has unveiled a significant enhancement to its Chrome web browser by introducing a feature called Skills, designed to streamline user workflows through artificial intelligence. This new functionality allows users to save and reuse their preferred AI prompts across various web pages without the need for repetitive typing.
This development builds upon Google’s integration of its Gemini AI into Chrome, positioning the browser competitively against emerging AI-driven browsers like OpenAI’s Atlas, Perplexity’s Comet, and The Browser Company’s Dia. Gemini already enables users to interact with web content by asking questions, summarizing information, and performing tasks. The addition of Skills elevates this capability by allowing users to create and access customized AI prompts with a single click.
How Skills Function
Users can save an AI prompt as a Skill directly from their chat history. To reuse a Skill, they can type a forward slash (/) or click the plus sign (+) button within Gemini in Chrome. The Skill will then execute on the current web page and any additional selected tabs. Importantly, these Skills are editable, providing flexibility for users to refine their prompts as needed.
Practical Applications
Early adopters have utilized Skills in various domains, including health and wellness, where users calculate protein macros in recipes; shopping, for comparing products; and document management, for scanning and summarizing lengthy texts. To assist users in getting started, Google is launching a Skills library offering common tasks and workflows in areas such as productivity, shopping, recipes, and budgeting. Users can add these pre-programmed Skills to their saved collection and customize them by editing the prompts to suit their specific needs.
User Control and Availability
Consistent with other Gemini actions in Chrome, Skills will request user confirmation before performing certain actions, such as sending emails or adding events to calendars, ensuring user control and security. The Skills feature is rolling out to Chrome desktop users signed into their Google accounts, initially supporting English (US) language settings.
This enhancement reflects Google’s commitment to integrating advanced AI capabilities into its products, aiming to provide users with more efficient and personalized browsing experiences.
