Uber and Nuro’s Premium Robotaxi Service Begins Testing in San Francisco
Uber, in collaboration with autonomous vehicle technology company Nuro, has initiated testing of a premium robotaxi service in San Francisco. This development marks a significant step toward the planned public launch later this year.
Employee Testing Phase
Currently, select Uber employees can request rides in autonomous Lucid Gravity SUVs through the Uber app. These vehicles, equipped with Nuro’s self-driving system, operate in autonomous mode with a human safety operator present as a precautionary measure. This internal testing phase is crucial for evaluating the integration of autonomous technology with user experience in real-world urban environments.
Strategic Investments and Partnerships
In July 2025, Uber announced a substantial investment of $300 million in Lucid Motors. Additionally, Uber committed to purchasing a minimum of 20,000 Lucid Gravity SUVs over the next six years. These vehicles are outfitted with Nuro’s advanced autonomous driving system, powered by Nvidia’s Drive AGX Thor computer. The Lucid Gravity robotaxi, unveiled in January 2026, features high-resolution cameras, solid-state lidar sensors, and radars, enabling comprehensive environmental perception and navigation.
Uber has also invested a significant, though undisclosed, amount into Nuro, underscoring its commitment to advancing autonomous vehicle technology. The plan is for Uber to own and operate the premium robotaxi service, potentially with assistance from third-party partners. Production of the modified Lucid Gravity vehicles is slated to commence in late 2026.

Nuro has been actively testing the autonomous Lucid Gravity SUVs, beginning with closed-course trials and progressing to public road testing in late 2025. The current engineering fleet comprises 100 such vehicles, utilized for gathering real-world data and refining autonomous driving capabilities across various U.S. cities and states.
