Google Unveils Major Redesigns for Gemini Overlay and Gemini Live on Android
In a significant update, Google has introduced comprehensive redesigns for the Gemini overlay and Gemini Live features on Android devices. These enhancements aim to streamline user interactions and provide a more cohesive experience across the platform.
Revamped Gemini Overlay
The Gemini overlay, which users access via voice commands or gestures, has undergone a notable transformation. Previously, the overlay featured separate menus for attachments and tools. The latest design consolidates these into a unified interface, enhancing accessibility and reducing on-screen clutter.
Key changes include:
– Compact Design: The overlay is now slightly narrower, with the Ask Gemini prompt enlarged for better visibility.
– Iconography Update: The microphone icon has been updated to an outline style, aligning with modern design aesthetics.
– Integrated Menu: Tapping the ‘+’ icon reveals a bottom sheet that combines various functionalities. This sheet features a carousel at the top for quick access to Photos, Camera, Files, Drive, and Notebooks, each represented by large, rounded square icons.
– Expanded Tools: Below the carousel, users can access options such as Create Image, Create Video, Create Music, Canvas, Deep Research, Guided Learning, and Personal Intelligence toggles. This integration mirrors the combined design Google has been testing on the web and is expected to extend to the full mobile app in future updates.
Overhauled Gemini Live Interface
Gemini Live, Google’s real-time interaction feature, has also received a substantial redesign to enhance user engagement and functionality.
– Floating Interface: The previous pill-shaped overlay has been replaced with a floating interface. At its center is the waveform display, flanked by screen sharing and keyboard icons for exiting Live mode. A captions button is conveniently located in the top-right corner.
– Adaptive Size: As users navigate their devices, the Live overlay condenses into a smaller circle, ensuring it remains unobtrusive while still accessible.
– Consistent Experience: This floating interface is now standard across the Gemini app, replacing the fullscreen interface and allowing the regular homescreen to remain visible underneath.
Availability
These redesigns are currently rolling out with the Google app beta version 17.3. Users eager to experience the new features can force stop the app from the App info settings if the update isn’t immediately visible. The redesigns are expected to become available in the stable channel in the near future.
