Apple Expands iOS 18.7.7 Update to Shield More iPhones from DarkSword Exploit

Apple Expands iOS 18.7.7 Update to Safeguard More iPhones Against DarkSword Exploit

Apple has broadened the reach of its iOS 18.7.7 and iPadOS 18.7.7 updates, now encompassing a wider array of devices to address the critical DarkSword security vulnerability. This expansion ensures that users who have opted to remain on iOS 18 receive essential protection against a severe web-based threat.

The DarkSword exploit enables attackers to gain control over an iPhone when a user visits a compromised website, posing a significant risk due to its ability to execute malicious code without any direct user interaction. Apple has confirmed that devices operating on iOS 26 are already safeguarded against this exploit.

Extended Device Coverage

Initially, the iOS 18.7.7 update was limited to older models such as the iPhone XS and XR. However, Apple has now extended its availability to a broader range of devices. This move is particularly beneficial for users who have automatic updates enabled and have not yet transitioned to iOS 26.

Apple’s proactive approach aims to provide comprehensive protection, even for those who prefer to stay on earlier software versions.

In a statement, Apple noted:

> Note: We enabled the availability of iOS 18.7.7 for more devices on April 1, 2026, so users with Automatic Updates turned on can automatically receive important security protections from web attacks called DarkSword. The fixes associated with the DarkSword exploit first shipped in 2025. Devices with older versions of iOS 18 will receive an additional alert to install a Critical Security Update.

Global Threat Landscape

The DarkSword exploit has been actively utilized by hacker groups targeting iPhone users in various countries, including Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Ukraine. Its availability on platforms like GitHub has further facilitated its accessibility to attackers, underscoring the urgency for users to install this update promptly.

While Apple continues to advocate for users to upgrade to iOS 26 for enhanced security measures, this latest release ensures that individuals remaining on iOS 18 are not left vulnerable to active threats.
