Google Fi Users Face ‘SIM Card is No Longer Active’ Error, Leading to Mobile Data Disruptions
On Tuesday, March 31, 2026, a segment of Google Fi subscribers encountered a significant service disruption characterized by the error message: Your SIM card is no longer active. This issue resulted in the loss of mobile data connectivity for affected users.
Google Fi, operating as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), acknowledged the problem through a notification on their support page. The message stated: Due to a high number of contacts, wait times are longer than normal. If you get the message ‘Your SIM card is no longer active’: We’re aware of this issue and working to resolve it as soon as possible. Please check back later for any updates.
While the exact cause of the error remains undisclosed, some subscribers have reported success in restoring service by contacting Google Fi support. Support agents have been able to address the issue remotely, often followed by a device reboot to reestablish connectivity.
In addition to official support channels, community members have suggested a temporary workaround. Users can navigate to the Google Fi app, select their user profile at the top, scroll down to International features, and toggle off Calls to non-US numbers. After waiting for approximately one minute, users can toggle the feature back on. This method has reportedly helped some users regain mobile data access.
This incident is not the first time Google Fi users have faced SIM-related issues. In October 2024, the company acknowledged a manufacturing defect that led to SIM card failures for certain customers. Affected users received notifications about the issue and were offered replacements. Additionally, in January 2023, Google Fi was impacted by a data breach involving its primary network provider, T-Mobile. The breach exposed limited customer data, including SIM card serial numbers and account status, though no sensitive personal information was compromised.
To enhance security and prevent unauthorized SIM swaps, Google Fi introduced the Number Lock feature in July 2024. This feature allows users to lock their phone numbers, preventing unauthorized transfers to new devices or carriers. Users can enable this feature by accessing their account settings on the Google Fi website.
As the current SIM card is no longer active issue unfolds, Google Fi continues to work on a resolution. Subscribers are advised to monitor official channels for updates and to reach out to support if they experience connectivity problems.
