Google Enhances Messages App with Trash Folder, Encrypted RCS, and User Interface Upgrades

Google has recently introduced a suite of enhancements to its Messages app, aiming to enrich user experience and bolster communication security. These updates encompass features like a Trash folder, Tap to Draft functionality, cross-platform encrypted RCS messaging, a redesigned read receipts system, and an updated long-press menu.

Trash Folder

The new Trash folder allows users to recover deleted conversations within a 30-day window. Accessible via the account menu, this feature provides a safeguard against accidental deletions, ensuring important messages can be retrieved if needed.

Tap to Draft

To minimize unintended message sends, the Tap to Draft feature has been introduced. When enabled through Settings > Suggestions, selecting a Smart Reply places it into the text field for review and editing before sending. This ensures that responses are intentional and accurate.

Cross-Platform Encrypted RCS Messaging

In collaboration with Apple, Google is testing end-to-end encrypted Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging between Android and iPhone devices. This initiative, currently in beta as of iOS 26.4 beta 2, aims to provide secure messaging across platforms. Users will notice a lock icon at the beginning of threads, indicating the encryption status.

Redesigned Read Receipts

The read receipts feature has been revamped for clarity. Indicators are now positioned in a circle at the bottom-right corner of message bubbles and images. Users can swipe left to view timestamps and encryption status, or swipe right to reply, streamlining the messaging interface.

Updated Long-Press Menu

Enhancing message interaction, the long-press menu now displays as a floating interface when a message or image is pressed. The background blurs, and haptic feedback is provided, offering a more immersive and intuitive user experience.

These updates reflect Google’s commitment to improving the functionality and security of its messaging platform, ensuring users have a seamless and protected communication experience.
