In a strategic move to bolster its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, Microsoft has integrated the team from Cove, a Sequoia-backed startup renowned for its AI-driven collaboration platform. This acquisition underscores Microsoft’s commitment to advancing AI-powered productivity solutions.

Established in late 2023 by former Google Maps engineers Stephen Chau, Andy Szybalski, and Mike Chu, Cove embarked on a mission to revolutionize collaborative workspaces. The startup secured $6 million in seed funding from prominent investors, including Sequoia Capital, Elad Gil, Homebrew, Adverb, Scott Belsky, and Lenny Rachitsky in 2024.
Cove’s flagship product was an expansive digital whiteboard enhanced with AI functionalities. This platform allowed users to engage in tasks such as trip planning by generating dynamic content blocks. Unlike traditional chat-based AI interfaces, Cove’s canvas approach offered users greater flexibility, enabling them to interact with and modify AI-generated content seamlessly.

This allowed users to provide comprehensive context to the AI, which could then generate new cards, tables, and lists tailored to the user’s needs. Transition to Microsoft
In an email to its user base, Cove announced that its entire team would be joining Microsoft. Consequently, the Cove platform is scheduled to cease operations on April 1, with all user data set for deletion. To ensure a smooth transition for its users, Cove has refunded all March subscriptions and provided a data export process.
