Motional’s Robotaxis Now Available on Uber in Las Vegas After Major Overhaul

Starting Friday, Uber users in Las Vegas can hail Motional’s autonomous vehicles for rides to and from five key locations:
– Resorts World and Encore hotel casinos on the Strip
– Westgate, adjacent to the Las Vegas Convention Center
– Town Square shopping center near the airport
– Downtown Las Vegas
Initially, these rides will include a safety monitor onboard. Users can increase their chances of being matched with a robotaxi by enabling the autonomous vehicle pickup option within the Uber app. Both companies plan to expand the service area and aim to offer fully driverless rides by the end of the year.
Motional’s Journey and Restructuring
Motional, originally a joint venture between Hyundai and Aptiv, faced significant challenges two years ago. The company was behind on its goal to launch a robotaxi service with Lyft, leading Aptiv to withdraw its funding. Hyundai responded by investing an additional $1 billion into Motional, which underwent a major restructuring, including a 40% reduction in its workforce. The company also shifted its technological approach, focusing more on neural networks to enhance its autonomous driving capabilities.
Laura Major, Motional’s President and CEO, highlighted the strategic shift during a presentation at the 2026 Consumer Electronics Show, emphasizing the decision to pause commercial activities temporarily to accelerate future developments.
