Apple iOS 26.4 Beta Adds Nine New Emoji, Drops RCS Encryption Beta

Apple’s iOS 26.4 Beta Introduces Nine New Emoji Characters

Apple has released the fourth beta of iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, and macOS Tahoe 26.4 to developers, introducing nine new emoji characters. These additions are part of the Unicode 17 update previewed by the Unicode Consortium in fall 2025. The new emojis include:

– Trombone
– Treasure Chest
– Distorted Face
– Hairy Creature (also known as Bigfoot or Sasquatch)
– Fight Cloud
– Orca
– Landslide

Additionally, Apple has introduced new skin tone modifiers for the People Wrestling and Dancers with Bunny Ears emojis, along with a gender-neutral option for the Ballet Dancer emoji.

The Unicode Consortium, responsible for standardizing emoji characters across platforms, unveiled these additions in September 2025. Apple typically takes several months to design and implement new emoji, often incorporating them into spring software updates, such as the .4 versions. For instance, in March 2025, iOS 18.4 introduced emojis like Face with Eye Bags, Fingerprint, Leafless Tree, Root Vegetable, Harp, Shovel, and Splatter.

Looking ahead, the Unicode Consortium has proposed additional emojis for Unicode 18, expected to be finalized in September 2026. These proposed emojis include:

– Squinting Face
– Monarch Butterfly
– Left- and Right-Pointing Thumb Gestures
– Pickle
– Lighthouse
– Meteor
– Eraser
– Net with Handle

These additions are subject to change during the Unicode Consortium’s review process. Once finalized, Apple will create its own versions of these emojis, likely introducing them in a future iOS update, such as iOS 27.

In addition to new emojis, the iOS 26.4 beta includes other updates:

– Reduce Bright Effects: Apple has renamed the Reduce Highlighting Effects accessibility setting to Reduce Bright Effects. This feature minimizes highlighting and flashing when interacting with onscreen elements, such as buttons or the keyboard.

– RCS Encrypted Messaging: Apple has removed the RCS end-to-end encryption beta in the fourth beta of iOS 26.4 after testing it in the prior three betas. Apple has stated that end-to-end encryption for RCS will not launch in the iOS 26.4 update but will be introduced in a future update.

– New Device Support: iOS 26.4 and iPadOS 26.4 beta 4 are the first betas that can be installed on the new iPhone 17e and M4 iPad Air.

Apple’s commitment to expanding and diversifying its emoji library reflects the company’s dedication to inclusivity and user expression. By incorporating these new characters, Apple ensures that users have a broader range of symbols to communicate emotions, objects, and concepts in their digital conversations.
