Apple and Sydney Opera House Unite to Foster Australian Creativity
Apple and the Sydney Opera House have embarked on a yearlong partnership aimed at nurturing the next generation of Australian creatives. This collaboration seeks to broaden access to programs that support art, design, and culture across the nation.
A highlight of this initiative is the Illuminating Creativity project, scheduled from March 25 to 27. During these evenings, the Opera House’s eastern Bennelong sails will serve as a canvas for digital art. Ten emerging Australian artists have been commissioned to create original static and moving-image artworks using the Procreate app on iPad. These pieces will be projected onto the sails, transforming the iconic structure into a vibrant display of contemporary Australian talent.
In addition to showcasing commissioned works, the public is invited to participate in this creative endeavor. From March 9 to 15, free Today at Apple sessions will be held at Apple Store locations across Australia. Participants can create their own digital artworks on iPad, with the opportunity to submit their creations for consideration in the final projection. This inclusive approach aims to engage the community and highlight the accessibility of digital art tools.
Beyond the Illuminating Creativity project, the partnership encompasses a range of initiatives focused on interactive programming and experiences for young Australians. Apple will serve as the founding partner of a new international children’s festival set to debut later this year. Additionally, Apple will support the Opera House’s Centre for Creativity—a dedicated space for hands-on creative participation—and explore innovative ways to enhance the Opera House’s programming through technology.
Louise Herron AM, CEO of the Sydney Opera House, emphasized the synergy between the two organizations:
The Sydney Opera House, like Apple, is synonymous with creativity. This collaboration is a natural fit between two organizations that continue to search for new ways for people to experience the world. From our first international children’s festival to exciting programming highlights throughout the year, Apple’s support will enable us to continue to inspire and welcome more of the community in line with our ambition to be Everyone’s House.
Greg Joswiak, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing, highlighted the company’s longstanding commitment to empowering creativity:
For 50 years, Apple has been at the forefront of empowering creativity, providing tools that allow people to imagine, design, and share their unique visions with the world. The yearlong collaboration with the Sydney Opera House and ‘Illuminating Creativity’ is a celebration of this legacy, bringing together the incredible talent of Australian artists and the transformative power of iPad and Procreate. We are thrilled to be working with such an iconic Australian cultural landmark to help inspire the next generation of creatives.
This partnership not only celebrates Australian creativity but also underscores the transformative potential of technology in the arts. By providing platforms and tools for artistic expression, Apple and the Sydney Opera House aim to inspire and cultivate a vibrant creative community for years to come.
