Alibaba’s Qwen AI Project Faces Leadership Shake-Up Amidst Rapid Advancements
In a surprising development, Junyang Lin, a pivotal technical leader of Alibaba’s Qwen AI initiative, has announced his departure from the project. This news comes just a day after the Chinese tech conglomerate unveiled its latest Qwen 3.5 open-weight small models.
Lin, who joined Alibaba in July 2019 and became an integral part of the Qwen team in April 2023, shared his decision to step down via a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday. He did not provide further details regarding his resignation.
The timing of Lin’s exit has raised eyebrows, especially as the global race in artificial intelligence intensifies, with companies striving to develop models that can compete with those from industry leaders like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic.
Alibaba’s Qwen series has emerged as a significant player in China’s open-weight AI landscape. Introduced in April 2023 and made publicly accessible by September after obtaining regulatory approval, the Qwen models have consistently delivered benchmark results that rival those of leading U.S. developers.
On Monday, Alibaba expanded its AI portfolio by launching the Qwen 3.5 Small Model series. This new lineup comprises four models with parameters ranging from 0.8 billion to 9 billion. Designed as native multimodal models, they cater to applications from on-device AI deployments to lightweight agents. The release garnered attention from prominent figures in the AI community, including Elon Musk, who commented on X about the models’ impressive intelligence density.
Lin’s departure has elicited strong reactions from colleagues and industry partners, underscoring his central role in the Qwen project. Wenting Zhao, a research scientist on the Qwen team, described Lin’s exit as the end of an era, expressing gratitude for his contributions to open-source AI and engineering advancements. Yuchen Jin, CTO of AI infrastructure startup Hyperbolic, highlighted Lin’s efforts in connecting Qwen with the global developer community, recalling their late-night collaborations during model launches. Tiezhen Wang, head of APAC ecosystem at Hugging Face, termed Lin’s departure as an immense loss for the project.
The exact reasons behind Lin’s resignation remain unclear, and he has not responded to requests for further comments. Additionally, Binyuan Hui, another member of the Qwen team, has updated his X profile to indicate he is formerly MTS @Alibaba_Qwen, though it’s uncertain whether he has left the company or when this change occurred.
Alibaba has yet to comment on the leadership changes within the Qwen team or the circumstances surrounding Lin’s departure.
