Google Photos Introduces Convenient Shortcut for Local Folders on Android
Google Photos for Android is enhancing user experience by introducing a new shortcut that provides direct access to local folders from any section of the app. This update aims to streamline navigation and improve accessibility for users managing their on-device media.
Previously, accessing local folders required navigating through multiple steps: users had to open the Collections tab and then select the On this device section to view folders such as Screenshots, Quick Share, and Movies. The new update simplifies this process by adding a file folder icon to the top bar, positioned to the left of the ‘plus’ and notification bell icons. Tapping this icon instantly directs users to the On this device page, displaying all local folders without the need for additional navigation.
This shortcut is accessible from all four main tabs within the app, ensuring that users can reach their local folders regardless of their current location within Google Photos. While the addition of this icon contributes to a more crowded top bar—especially considering the persistent backup indicator on the left—it offers a significant convenience for users who frequently access their device’s local media.
The rollout of this feature is associated with version 7.64 of Google Photos and has been observed on multiple devices as of February 27, 2026. However, it is important to note that the update is not yet universally available, indicating a phased deployment.
This enhancement reflects Google’s ongoing commitment to refining the user interface and functionality of Google Photos. By reducing the steps required to access local folders, the app becomes more intuitive and user-friendly, catering to the needs of users who manage a mix of cloud-based and local media.
In the broader context of Google Photos’ evolution, this update aligns with previous efforts to improve navigation and accessibility. For instance, in March 2024, Android introduced a cloud photo picker that integrates Google Photos, allowing users to access their cloud-stored images directly from the system photo picker. Additionally, in May 2024, Google Photos tested a Collections redesign aimed at organizing the library more efficiently, though user feedback indicated a preference for the existing structure.
These developments underscore Google’s dedication to enhancing the functionality and user experience of Google Photos. The introduction of the local folder shortcut is a testament to this commitment, providing users with a more streamlined and efficient way to manage their on-device media.
