U.S. Government Bans Anthropic AI Over National Security Concerns
In a decisive move, the United States government has ordered all federal agencies to cease using Anthropic’s AI model, Claude, citing significant national security risks. This action marks the first time a domestic AI company has been designated a supply chain risk, a classification previously reserved for foreign entities like Huawei.
On February 28, 2026, President Donald Trump announced via Truth Social that all federal agencies must IMMEDIATELY CEASE all use of Anthropic’s technology. A six-month phase-out period has been granted to departments heavily integrated with Claude, such as the Department of War (DoW).
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reinforced this directive, declaring Anthropic a Supply-Chain Risk to National Security. He stated that no contractor, supplier, or partner that does business with the United States military may conduct any commercial activity with Anthropic.
The core of the dispute lies in Anthropic’s refusal to grant the Pentagon unrestricted access to Claude for mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons systems. CEO Dario Amodei expressed ethical concerns, stating the company cannot in good conscience accede to these demands.
Anthropic has been under a $200 million DoW contract since June 2024, deploying models on classified networks. Despite months of negotiations, the Pentagon issued an ultimatum: comply by 5:01 PM ET on Friday or face blacklisting.
Amodei argues that current AI models are unreliable for fully autonomous weapons and that mass surveillance violates civil rights. Anthropic plans to challenge the supply chain risk designation in court, contending it is legally unsound under 10 USC 3252, which limits such designations to DoW contract use.
The broader industry impact could be significant, as Anthropic relies on cloud services from companies like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google, all of which hold defense contracts. A strict interpretation of the ban could jeopardize these relationships.
President Trump warned of major civil and criminal consequences if Anthropic fails to cooperate during the phase-out period. Anthropic remains committed to supporting lawful national security use cases and ensuring a smooth transition for military operations.
