YouTube Premium Lite Enhances Features Without Raising Prices
YouTube has recently enhanced its Premium Lite subscription by introducing two highly requested features: background play and video downloads. This update allows subscribers to enjoy most videos without ads, save them for offline viewing, and continue playback in the background while using other applications.
Previously, these functionalities were exclusive to the full YouTube Premium plan, priced at $13.99 per month in the United States. In contrast, Premium Lite remains at a more affordable $7.99 per month. This enhancement makes the Lite plan a more attractive option, particularly for users who primarily consume non-music content.
YouTube has confirmed that the rollout of these new features begins today, though it may take several weeks for all subscribers to access them. The company stated, You asked, and we listened! Today, we’re announcing that Background Play and Downloads are coming to YouTube’s Premium Lite subscription service. They further mentioned that the expansion will continue in the coming weeks across all regions where Premium Lite is available.
Premium Lite Now Includes:
– Ad-free viewing on most non-music videos
– Background play
– Offline downloads
However, certain limitations persist. Advertisements still appear on Shorts, and Premium Lite does not eliminate ads from music videos. Additionally, this plan does not provide access to YouTube Music Premium.
In comparison, the full YouTube Premium plan offers an ad-free experience across all videos, including music content, and includes features such as jump ahead, queuing, and continue watching.
YouTube expanded the Premium Lite pilot to more markets last year and received feedback from users desiring these additional features. With the inclusion of background play and downloads, Premium Lite becomes a more compelling option for viewers seeking fewer ads without the higher cost of the full Premium package.
