Spotify’s AI-Powered Prompted Playlists Now Available in the UK and Beyond
Spotify has expanded its innovative Prompted Playlist feature to Premium subscribers in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and Sweden. This rollout follows successful trials in New Zealand and recent launches in the United States and Canada.
The Prompted Playlist feature empowers users to craft personalized playlists by simply describing their desired listening experience. Instead of manually searching for specific songs or artists, users can articulate the mood, scenario, or inspiration they have in mind, and Spotify’s AI will curate a matching playlist.
To utilize this feature, users should:
1. Tap on Create within the Spotify app.
2. Select Prompted Playlist.
3. Enter a descriptive prompt in English.
The AI is adept at interpreting a wide range of themes, including:
– Moods: e.g., Relaxing evening
– Aesthetics: e.g., Vintage vibes
– Memories: e.g., Songs from my college days
Users can be as broad or specific as they wish, referencing:
– Musical Eras: e.g., 80s rock anthems
– Genres: e.g., Jazz fusion
– Activities: e.g., Workout motivation
– Lyrics: e.g., Songs about adventure
– Instruments: e.g., Acoustic guitar ballads
– Media Inspirations: e.g., Inspired by ‘Stranger Things’
– Personal Milestones: e.g., Celebrating my anniversary
Additionally, users can specify whether they prefer the playlist to feature predominantly new music or selections from their existing library.
Upon submitting a prompt, Spotify’s AI generates a customized playlist tailored to the user’s request. The system leverages the user’s listening history and integrates current music and cultural trends. Each song in the playlist is accompanied by a brief explanation, providing insight into its inclusion.
Users have the flexibility to refine their playlists by adjusting their prompts or starting anew. For those with ever-evolving musical tastes, playlists can be set to refresh automatically on a daily or weekly basis.
As this feature is currently in beta, Spotify acknowledges that adjustments may be made based on user feedback. There are also usage limits in place; some users have reported encountering limits after approximately 20 to 30 prompts.
This expansion is part of Spotify’s broader initiative to integrate AI features across its platform. Recent additions include:
– Page Match: Allows users to scan a physical book page to jump to the corresponding spot in the audiobook.
– About the Song: Provides detailed information about the background and context of songs.
– Enhanced Lyrics Feature: Offers global translations and offline access to song lyrics.
Furthermore, Spotify has partnered with SeatGeek to help listeners easily find ticket links for concerts on an artist’s page or upcoming tour dates within the app.
Internally, Spotify has been leveraging AI to streamline its workflows. Co-CEO Gustav Söderström noted that since December, the company’s top developers have not written a single line of code, thanks to AI integration.
In addition to digital innovations, Spotify is expanding its audiobook business by venturing into physical book sales. Soon, users in the U.S. and U.K. will be able to purchase physical copies directly from the app.
