Apple Introduces CarPlay Video Playback in iOS 26.4 Beta
Apple is advancing its CarPlay platform by introducing video playback capabilities in the iOS 26.4 beta. This development aligns with the company’s earlier commitment to enhance CarPlay’s functionality, allowing users to watch videos on their vehicle’s display while parked.
During the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in 2025, Apple announced plans to enable video streaming through CarPlay, emphasizing safety by restricting playback to when the vehicle is stationary. The iOS 26.4 beta is the first iteration where this feature is evident in the code, although it remains inaccessible through the public interface.
Developer Thomas Dye successfully activated parts of this hidden interface using Xcode’s CarPlay simulator on a Mac. His demonstration revealed that videos from any AirPlay-supported app could be played on the car’s display once the iPhone is connected to CarPlay.
How CarPlay Video Playback Works
In the simulation, users can transfer video playback between the iPhone and the car display using a control within the Dynamic Island. This feature offers a seamless way to shift viewing back to the phone when necessary.
The demonstration also showcased an Apple TV app designed specifically for CarPlay. This app provides access to Apple TV+ shows, purchased content, and a dedicated MLS Season Pass section. However, Apple has not confirmed whether the final release will include all features observed in the simulator.
It’s important to note that automakers must enable support for this feature, as the system permits playback only when the vehicle is parked. Therefore, the rollout of this functionality depends not only on Apple’s release of iOS 26.4 but also on car manufacturers updating their systems accordingly.
Once iOS 26.4 becomes publicly available, the focus will shift to automakers to implement the necessary updates, officially bringing CarPlay video playback to drivers.
