Xiaomi Unveils Ultra-Thin Magnetic Battery Bank; Qi2 Compatibility in Question

Xiaomi’s Ultra-Thin Magnetic Battery Bank: A Sleek Power Solution with Potential Qi2 Limitations

Xiaomi has recently unveiled an impressively slim magnetic wireless battery bank, measuring just 9mm in thickness. This sleek device offers a wireless charging capability of 15W and, when connected via a cable, can deliver up to 22.5W. Notably, it supports simultaneous charging of a device wirelessly and another through a wired connection without compromising speed.

Safety is a key focus for Xiaomi in this design. The battery bank features a fiberglass rear panel and an aluminum battery encased with ten layers of protection. These layers guard against potential hazards such as overvoltage, overheating, and overcharging, ensuring a secure charging experience.

Despite its advanced features, the battery bank’s compatibility with the Qi2 standard remains uncertain. The Qi2 standard, established by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), allows for wireless charging speeds up to 25W and ensures compatibility across certified devices. However, Xiaomi’s new battery bank does not appear in the WPC’s certification database, with the last Xiaomi battery listed dating back to 2024.

The absence of Qi2 certification raises questions about the device’s compatibility with non-Xiaomi products. While the battery bank is designed to charge devices at 15W wirelessly, this speed is specified for Xiaomi’s proprietary phones. For iPhone users, the wireless charging speed is expected to be limited to 7.5W.

Chinese manufacturers like Xiaomi often lead in pushing technological boundaries, introducing innovations such as silicon-carbon batteries and 100W fast wired charging ahead of other companies. However, the lack of Qi2 certification in this instance may indicate a cautious approach, possibly due to safety concerns or the need for further testing before mass distribution.

For consumers seeking Qi2-certified alternatives, options like Baseus’s compact 5,000mAh battery bank are available. Although it is twice the thickness of Xiaomi’s model, it offers a more compact form factor in terms of width and height.

Xiaomi’s ultra-thin 5,000mAh power bank is currently available in Japan, priced at approximately $50.
