Apple Unveils Expansive Sainte-Catherine Store in Downtown Montreal
Apple has officially reopened its Sainte-Catherine store in downtown Montreal, introducing a significantly larger and meticulously restored retail space that honors the city’s rich architectural heritage. This move not only enhances Apple’s presence in Montreal but also reflects the company’s commitment to blending modern retail experiences with historical preservation.
A Grand Expansion in a Historic Setting
The newly reimagined store is situated at the intersection of Rue Sainte-Catherine and Rue de la Montagne, occupying the first floor of a beautifully restored historic building. This location more than doubles the size of the previous store, offering customers a more spacious and immersive environment. The upper floors of the building remain closed to the public, maintaining the integrity of the structure’s original design.
Apple has taken great care to preserve key architectural elements of the building, seamlessly integrating them with contemporary design features. The interior boasts a curved wooden ceiling and a redesigned entrance, creating a harmonious blend of old and new. This thoughtful approach ensures that the store resonates with both the history of the building and Apple’s modern aesthetic.
Deirdre O’Brien, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Retail and People, attended the grand opening and emphasized the store’s significance to the local community:
For nearly 20 years, we’ve been proud to be part of the downtown Montreal community, whose spirit of creativity and innovation continues to inspire us. We’re incredibly excited to build on this long-standing relationship and create a destination where customers can experience the very best of Apple.
Enhanced Design and Accessibility Features
Inside the store, customers will find familiar elements such as side-by-side counters for the Genius Bar and Apple Pickup, designed to streamline service and product collection. The layout has been thoughtfully planned to enhance accessibility, featuring varied table and seating heights, wider pathways to accommodate wheelchair users, and clear circulation routes throughout the space.
The exterior of the building has been meticulously restored by local artisans, utilizing Québec stone, granite, and copperwork to revive the historic façade. This restoration not only preserves the building’s original character but also contributes to the revitalization of the surrounding area.
Celebrating Local Art and Community Engagement
To commemorate the reopening, Apple collaborated with Montreal-based illustrator Catherine Potvin, who conducted live iPad art sessions within the store. During these sessions, she created custom illustrations for Apple shopping bags, adding a unique and personal touch to the customer experience. Potvin is scheduled to return on Saturday, January 17, for additional demonstrations between 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. local time.
In addition to these artistic collaborations, Apple has released a custom Mac and iPhone wallpaper to celebrate the new store. Early visitors were also treated to complimentary tote bags and winter toques, thoughtful gifts that acknowledge Montreal’s chilly winter temperatures.
A New Landmark in Apple’s Canadian Retail Landscape
With its expanded footprint and carefully restored setting, the Sainte-Catherine store now stands as one of Apple’s most prominent retail spaces in Canada. This reopening signifies more than just a new location; it represents a deepened commitment to the Montreal community and a dedication to providing an exceptional customer experience that honors both innovation and tradition.
