Google’s ‘Wicked’-Inspired Ad Playfully Highlights Pixel’s Innovations Over iPhone
In its latest installment of the BestPhonesForever series, Google has unveiled a whimsical advertisement that draws inspiration from the musical Wicked to showcase the Pixel Pro 10’s pioneering features, subtly suggesting that Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro has followed in its footsteps.
The 60-second commercial features anthropomorphized versions of the Pixel Pro 10 and iPhone 17 Pro, depicted as characters reminiscent of Elphaba and Glinda from Wicked. The iPhone, portrayed in a regal purple hue, expresses admiration for the Pixel’s trailblazing capabilities, such as advanced photo editing, call screening, and a conversational AI assistant. This admiration culminates in a musical number, with the devices singing a parody of Defying Gravity, emphasizing the Pixel’s role in leading technological advancements.
This creative approach aligns with Google’s ongoing strategy to highlight the Pixel’s innovative features in a lighthearted manner. Since 2023, the BestPhonesForever campaign has produced over 30 ads, each playfully contrasting the Pixel’s capabilities with those of the iPhone. Previous ads have humorously addressed topics like design similarities and the adoption of USB-C ports.
While the ad entertains with its theatrical flair, it stops short of providing in-depth demonstrations of the highlighted features. Instead, it relies on humor and cultural references to engage viewers, reinforcing the Pixel’s image as an innovator in the smartphone market.
