Google Home App Revamps Device Control Interface and Boosts Matter Integration for Smoother Smart Home Experience

Google Home App Unveils Major Device Control Redesign and Enhanced Matter Integration

Google has announced a significant overhaul of the Google Home app’s device control interface, aiming to provide users with a more intuitive and responsive smart home experience. This update, currently available through the Public Preview program, introduces a refreshed design for managing various smart devices, including lights, plugs, and switches.

Revamped Device Controls

The redesigned interface offers a more streamlined approach to device management. For instance, smart light controls now feature a prominent, pill-shaped slider for adjusting brightness levels. The brightness percentage is displayed beneath the slider, providing clear feedback during adjustments. Notably, the previous tap-to-toggle functionality has been replaced; users must now use the dedicated power button located in the top-right corner to turn devices on or off. When a device is powered off, the control container transforms into a rounded rectangle, visually indicating its status.

Additionally, the settings menu has been revamped. Accessed via the three-dot overflow icon, it now opens a sheet that can expand to full screen, offering options such as adding or removing devices from favorites, viewing device history (available to Google Home Premium subscribers), sending feedback, and accessing help resources. Color selection for compatible devices has also been improved, transitioning from a grid layout to a more user-friendly carousel format.

Enhanced Matter Integration

In line with the growing adoption of the Matter standard—a unified protocol for smart home devices—Google has enhanced the Home app’s compatibility. Android users with Matter-compatible devices and hubs can now control their devices locally, resulting in faster response times and improved reliability. This local control minimizes latency and reduces dependence on cloud services, offering a more seamless user experience.

Availability

These updates are currently accessible to users enrolled in the Google Home Public Preview program on both Android and iOS platforms. Google plans to roll out these features more broadly in the near future, aiming to provide all users with a more efficient and user-friendly smart home management tool.
