OpenAI has recently suspended the capability of its AI video model, Sora, to generate videos depicting the late civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This decision follows requests from Dr. King’s estate after instances of users producing disrespectful representations of his image.
In an official statement, OpenAI emphasized the importance of respecting the likenesses of public figures and their families. The company stated that authorized representatives or estate owners can request the exclusion of their likenesses from Sora-generated content.
This move comes shortly after the launch of Sora, OpenAI’s social video platform that enables users to create realistic AI-generated videos of historical figures and acquaintances. The platform’s debut has ignited discussions about the ethical implications of AI-generated content and the necessity for robust safeguards.
Dr. Bernice King, daughter of Dr. King, recently expressed her concerns on Instagram, urging individuals to refrain from sending her AI-generated videos of her father. Similarly, the daughter of the late actor Robin Williams has requested that users stop creating AI videos of her father.
Reports have surfaced of Sora users generating AI videos portraying Dr. King in inappropriate scenarios, including making monkey noises and engaging in wrestling matches with Malcolm X. Additionally, the platform has seen crude videos of other historical figures such as artist Bob Ross, singer Whitney Houston, and former President John F. Kennedy.
The licensor of Dr. King’s estate has yet to respond to requests for comment.
Beyond the portrayal of individuals, Sora’s launch has raised questions about the handling of AI-generated videos featuring copyrighted content. The platform hosts videos depicting characters from popular cartoons like SpongeBob, South Park, and Pokémon.
In response to these challenges, OpenAI has implemented additional restrictions on Sora. Earlier this month, the company announced plans to provide copyright holders with more granular control over the types of AI videos that can be generated using their likenesses. This initiative may be a response to initial concerns from Hollywood regarding Sora’s capabilities.
As OpenAI continues to refine Sora, the company is also adjusting its content moderation policies for other products. Recently, OpenAI announced that it would allow adult users to engage in erotic conversations with ChatGPT in the coming months.
The development of Sora has prompted OpenAI to confront the complexities associated with AI video generation. Some researchers within the company have publicly deliberated on the ethical considerations of launching an AI-powered social media platform and its alignment with OpenAI’s mission. CEO Sam Altman acknowledged the company’s apprehension about Sora on its launch day.
Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT, mentioned that the best way to educate the public about new technology is through direct exposure. He noted that OpenAI is applying lessons learned from ChatGPT to Sora, indicating an ongoing learning process in technology distribution.
