Google’s Gemini overlay has introduced a new Summarize page feature in Chrome for Android, enhancing users’ browsing experience by providing concise summaries of web content. This addition complements existing functionalities like Share screen with Live and Ask about page, all accessible above the Gemini prompt bar.
Upon selecting the Summarize page option, users are greeted with a vibrant animation in Google’s signature colors—red, yellow, green, and blue—emanating from the button. The generated summary appears in a floating window, which can be expanded for a more detailed view or used as a starting point for follow-up questions.
The underlying technology for this feature utilizes the 2.5 Flash model, regardless of whether users have set the 2.5 Pro model in the Gemini app. The prompt guiding the summary generation is: Please provide a summary using the text of this web page. Be concise but thorough, addressing key points in easy-to-understand language. Users can view this prompt by opening the full Gemini app.
This shortcut is available when browsing in Chrome or viewing a Chrome Custom Tab, including content from Discover articles, Search results, and the Google News app. Previously, Gemini supported webpage summaries, but users had to manually paste a link to generate them. The new feature streamlines this process, offering a more integrated and efficient user experience.
The Summarize page feature was announced alongside the introduction of Gemini in Chrome for Mac and Windows for free U.S. users last month. As of today, both stable and beta versions of the Google app support this functionality in Chrome on Android.
