Google’s Pixel Camera 10.1 Update Introduces Material 3 Expressive Redesign and Optimize FPS Feature

Google has begun rolling out the Pixel Camera 10.1 update to older Pixel devices, introducing the Material 3 Expressive design language and the new Optimize FPS feature. This update follows the initial release on the Pixel 10 series and brings a refreshed user interface and enhanced functionality to a broader range of users.

Viewfinder Enhancements

The viewfinder now features a solid circular capture button encircled by a transparent ring, replacing the previous design. Adjacent buttons have been transformed into rounded squares, and the preview of the most recent image includes a new animation reminiscent of a photo booth experience. Additionally, the number of icons utilizing Dynamic Color has been reduced, and font sizes across the user interface, including zoom shortcuts, have been adjusted for improved readability.

Settings Menu Refinements

In the Photo Settings menu, inactive controls are now displayed as rounded squares, while selected options are highlighted within circles. The General and Pro tabs have received similar design updates. The More settings button has been relocated to the top-right corner of the sheet and is represented by an ellipsis icon, reducing the panel’s height for better one-handed accessibility.

Camera Settings Organization

The Camera settings page now utilizes Material 3 Expressive containers to group related preferences, offering a more organized and intuitive layout. The settings are categorized as follows:

– General: Save location, Camera sounds, Device storage, Camera scan suggestions
– Composition: Framing hints, Grid type, Keep selfies as seen, Guided Frame
– Fast Access: Quick access controls, Volume key action, Palm timer
– Photo: Rich color in photos, Ultra HDR, Social media depth features, Frequent faces, Astrophotography, RAW/JPEG control
– Video: Video stabilization, Audio zoom, Store videos efficiently, Optimize FPS
– Advanced Capture: Timer light, Show dirty lens warning, Underwater photography and video (available on Pixel 9 and newer models)
– Help & Feedback: Send feedback, Help

Notably, the Optimize FPS feature, which automatically adjusts the frame rate from 60 FPS to 30 FPS to enhance the recording experience when necessary, is now available on the Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 9 models, following its debut on the Pixel 10.

The previous Advanced menu has been removed, with its options redistributed into the main settings list, resulting in a more streamlined and thematically organized interface.

Availability

The Pixel Camera 10.1 update is gradually being released via the Play Store. Users can also choose to sideload the update, though it requires a 1.47 GB download.
