Cosmic Robotics Revolutionizes Solar Panel Installation for Data Centers

The United States is experiencing a surge in solar farm construction, leading to a significant demand for skilled labor to install solar panels. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 48% increase in solar installer positions by 2033. Despite this anticipated growth, the industry faces challenges in recruiting and retaining workers, particularly due to the demanding nature of the job and the remote locations of many solar farms.

Addressing this labor shortage, Cosmic Robotics has introduced an innovative robotic assistant designed to alleviate the physical demands of solar panel installation. James Emerick, co-founder and CEO of Cosmic Robotics, highlighted the harsh conditions workers endure, stating, It’s terrible work in remote places. The company’s robotic solution aims to transform this landscape by taking on the heavy lifting, allowing human workers to focus on tasks requiring greater dexterity and decision-making.

Utility-scale solar panels can weigh up to 90 pounds, necessitating workers to lift and position them onto racks several feet above the ground. This repetitive, strenuous activity in extreme environments can lead to rapid fatigue and increased risk of injury. Cosmic Robotics’ robot, named Cosmic-1A, is engineered to mitigate these challenges. Equipped with an eight-wheeled base, a robotic arm with suction cups, and advanced sensors, Cosmic-1A can lift and place solar panels with precision, reducing the physical strain on human workers.

The robot operates by towing a trailer loaded with solar panels and utilizes high-accuracy GPS to navigate the installation site. Its robotic arm, guided by cameras and sensors, positions each panel within millimeters of its designated spot. Human workers oversee the process, ensuring proper alignment and securing the panels to the racks. This collaboration between human and machine not only enhances efficiency but also maintains the quality and safety standards of the installation process.

Emerick emphasized that the robot serves as a force amplifier, augmenting the capabilities of human workers rather than replacing them. By integrating Cosmic-1A into the workforce, a standard crew can potentially double their daily installation output. Currently, the robot can install a panel every 30 to 40 seconds, matching the speed of the fastest human installers but with sustained performance over longer periods.

In April 2025, Cosmic Robotics secured a $4 million pre-seed funding round led by Giant Ventures, with participation from HCVC, MaC Ventures, and angel investors including Azeem Azhar, Aarthi Ramamurthy, and Nate Williams. This investment is earmarked for manufacturing additional robots and deploying them in real-world production environments by the end of the year.

The introduction of robotic assistance in solar panel installation is particularly timely, given the escalating energy demands of data centers. Tech giants like Microsoft and Meta are increasingly investing in renewable energy sources to power their expansive data centers. For instance, Microsoft added 475 megawatts of solar power to its portfolio in March 2025 to support its AI data centers. Similarly, Meta signed a 595-megawatt solar deal in Texas in January 2025 to fuel its data center expansion.

The rapid deployment of solar energy is crucial to meet the growing power needs of these data centers. Traditional power plants, such as nuclear and natural gas facilities, require years to construct and become operational. In contrast, utility-scale solar farms can be brought online in as little as 18 months, making them an attractive option for tech companies seeking immediate and sustainable energy solutions.

However, the swift expansion of solar infrastructure is hindered by labor shortages and the physically demanding nature of the work.
